DESCRIPTION
Kandake.2 is the revisitation of the original artwork, ‘Kandake’ which was created in 2013.
The artwork was named 'Kandake', after the name of the artist's daughter, Candice. The Kandake were the matriachal leaders of the ancient empire of Kush (bottom right) and were one of the few powers at the time to bring the march of the Roman Empire (referenced by the imperial SPQR totem and the military testudo).
Alot of the imagery relates to the female: the eyes, the lips, the cloud of lactating breasts feeding the earth above the chemical symbols of life and the plant. The DNA helix, chemical symbols, atomic structures and the biology of conception abound. Male is represented by the phalli ascending the steps in the middle of the piece.
There are other life themes present in the artwork: the steps (probably inspired by the 199 steps leading to Whitby abbey in the artist’s hometown), representing the journey of life - ‘two paths’ (referenced in Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven’ and Christ’s discourse: ‘Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life’.
Pop culture is present as is the case in most of Anthony Hodgson-Cru’s artwork – Tomohiro’s Space Invaders (1978) and Pacman (1980) that were a part of the artist’s teenage years.
Finally, the semi-abstract figures in the top-left corner are inspired by the centuries of women labouring in the paddy fields of S E Asia. Here, they have been raised to represent the divine presence in the sky, or heaven.
In conclusion, Kandake.2 is a celebration of the power, strength and creativity of Woman and my personal paean to that spirit.
‘Kandake.2' is available in the following formats:
